Science: Agriculture Major, A.S.

Purpose: This curriculum is designed to serve various types of students. This curriculum is customizable for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a baccalaureate degree in veterinary sciences, or agricultural education.  It can also be customized for students who plan to work on, own or manage an agricultural facility, or develop their own agribusiness.

Admission Requirements:  Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to credit-level coursework established by the college.

Placement Requirements: Students who do not demonstrate readiness for college-level English will be required to select appropriate EDE 10  or ENG 111 /EDE 11*  coursework in consultation with an advisor.

Students who do not demonstrate readiness for college-level math will be required to select appropriate MDE coursework in consultation with an advisor.

Program Notes: Suggested science sequences for students who plan to transfer to a 4-year institution are either BIO 101*  and BIO 102*  or CHM 111*  and CHM 112* .

Note: Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences requires a 3.0 and degree completion for transfer in the fall as a junior in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. There is a Virginia Tech graduation requirement of two (2) years of the same language in high school or taken at a college.

Note: The Agriculture Career Studies Certificate  requires six classes and can be completed in conjunction with this degree program with the appropriate advising4.

Students who intend to transfer should verify specific program requirements with their four-year institution.

Total Minimum Credits for Degree: 61


Students who plan to transfer to a 4-year institution should take MTH 167*  (5-credits) and MTH 155* .

2 Students who plan to transfer should consult with the program advisor to determine which course is most appropriate for their intended transfer.

Students who take PHY 241*  must take MTH 263*  as a prerequisite and MTH 264*  as a corequisite.

This AS degree program requires three of the six AG CSC classes, including AGR 141* AGR 142* , and AGR 143  . For students wishing to complete the Agriculture Career Studies Certificate  in conjunction with the AS, they should take FOR 115 , AGR 241 , and HRT 161 .
