Purpose: This curriculum is designed to academically prepare students to enroll in the entry-level paramedic program.
Program Objectives: Completion of this Career Studies Certificate curriculum will prepare students for success in the Associate of Applied Science Paramedic program. Students will develop foundational skills and knowledge in anatomy & physiology, communication skills, emergency medical services, basic life support, patient assessment and the operation of emergency medical equipment.
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to credit-level coursework established by the college. Per the state of Virginia, participants must be a minimum of 16 years of age at the beginning of the classes for EMS 111* /EMS 120* to be eligible to participate. If a prospective student is either 16 or 17, they must have a parent/guardian come to the first day of class to sign acknowledgements from the state, allowing the student to participate in the class and they understand the role and responsibilities of an EMT.
Placement Requirements: A placement recommendation for college level math with or without the co-requisite or successful completion of MDE 10 . And, a placement recommendation for ENG 111 , ENG 111 /EDE 11* , or successful completion of EDE 10 .
Program Notes:
Students who successfully complete this program are eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
