Career Studies Certificate

Purpose: This Career Studies Certificate is designed to prepare individuals for an entry-level position working in the legal field, or to provide additional professional qualifications to those already working as secretaries or legal assistants in the legal field. This short-term program can also serve as a foundation for students who wish to pursue a more in-depth AAS Paralegal Studies degree.

Program Objectives: This program is designed to prepare graduates to seek employment as a legal assistant or legal secretary. Students will complete coursework in basic legal classes, as well as computer classes that will allow them to become MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certified in multiple Microsoft programs.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to credit-level coursework established by the college.

Placement Requirements: Students who do not demonstrate readiness for college-level English will be required to select appropriate EDE 10  or ENG 111 /EDE 11*  coursework in consultation with an advisor.

Program Notes: Students in the Legal Office Assisting Career Studies Certificate Program may continue their studies and complete the AAS program in Paralegal Studies in as few as three more semesters. All legal courses are taught by licensed attorneys, and many courses are available in both traditional and online options.
