Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) Career Studies Certificate

Purpose: The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Career Studies Program is designed to prepare selected AART eligible or Registered Technologists to qualify as contributing members of the allied health interdisciplinary team which has need for highly skilled MR technologists. Upon completion of the curriculum and successful completion and documentation of all required clinical competencies as set forth by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) the student will be eligible to apply and take the national registry examination leading to advanced certification as a Registered Technologist in MR by the ARRT.

Occupational Objectives: The technologist is eligible to apply and take the national ARRT examination leading to advanced certification as a Registered Technologist in MR.

Admission Requirements: This is a restricted admissions program. Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to credit-level coursework established by the college. Please see the program-specific admission requirements at https://www.virginiawestern.edu/academics/health-professions/mri/

Retention Policies: Technologists who receive a final grade lower than a “C” in any course will not receive the certificate until a grade of “C” or better is obtained. Technologists can petition to retake courses.

A two-credit limited clinical component is available upon request after successful completion of all MRI program courses. Students must have a current CPR Healthcare Provider certification and must maintain that certification throughout clinicals. Additionally, the student must complete educational requirements as stated in the clinical affiliation agreements, such as, but not limited to, background check, drug screen, proof of immunization, etc. If interested, please contact the Radiography Program Head.

Program Notes:  This program is offered in the fall semester of even years (for example Fall 2022, Fall 2024).  This program can be completed online.

Admission Requirements and Procedures: The student in Magnetic Resonance Imaging must have completed an approved program in radiography, radiation oncology or nuclear medicine technology. The student must be registry eligible by the ARRT in Radiography, Radiation Oncology, or Nuclear Medicine in order to apply, and ARRT Board registered to begin the program. Applicants must have maintained a “C” average in past program courses in the discipline of certification.

Applicants must complete an application to VWCC, provide official transcripts of all other colleges attended, provide a minimum of 2 letters of reference and have an interview with a member of the Radiography program faculty prior to formal admission. The student in Magnetic Resonance Imaging must abide by all community college policies.

Students are responsible for Internet access for distance courses.
