Uniform Certificate of General Studies

This program is not eligible for federal or state financial aid.

Purpose: The Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS), formerly the General Education Certificate, is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year public college or university in Virginia.  When completed, the UCGS will satisfy lower-division general education requirements at all four-year public colleges and universities in Virginia. Students should select courses in general education that best align to their major requirements. 

Program Objectives: To prepare students for transfer to a four-year college or university in Virginia.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to credit-level coursework established by the college.

Placement Requirements: Students who do not demonstrate readiness for college-level English will be required to select appropriate EDE 10  or ENG 111 /EDE 11*  coursework in consultation with an advisor.

Students who do not demonstrate readiness for the college-level math will be required to select appropriate MDE coursework in consultation with an advisor.

Transfer Requirement: All courses must be completed with a C or better. All courses except SDV 101  shall be transferable and satisfy the lower-division general education requirement at any public institution of higher education in Virginia. Courses may satisfy the general education requirement without having a specific course equivalent at the receiving institution.

Total Minimum Credits for Degree: 33


1 SDV 101  is required in the curriculum but does not transfer and will not fulfill general education transfer course requirements.

2 Students must complete ENG 112*  before taking the Literature Elective. For students wanting to complete both classes in one semester, ENG 112*  should be taken in the first 8 week session and the Literature Elective in the second 8 week session.
