    Provides basic understanding of safety and health in an industrial situation. Includes hazardous materials, substances, conditions, activities and habits as well as the prescribed methods and equipment needed for the apprentice to protect himself/herself and others. Class attendance and completion of this course satisfies the 10-hour requirement to sit for the OSHA certification exam. Lecture 2 hours per week.

    Introduces history of welding processes. Covers types of equipment and assembly of units. Stresses welding procedures such as fusion, non-fusion, and cutting oxyacetylene. Introduces arc welding.     Studies the operation of AC and DC power sources, weld heat, polarities and electrodes for use in joining various alloys by the SMAW process.     Studies steel classifications, heat treatment procedures, properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Discusses techniques and practices of testing welded joints and destructive/ nondestructive, visual magnetic, and fluorescent testing. Lecture 3 hours per week.
